IMPROVING STUDENTS READING COMPETENCE USING STUDENT TEAMS ACHIEVEMENT-DIVISION (STAD) TECHNIQUE (A Classroom Action Research at VIII-A Grade Students of SMP Negeri Sumbang in Academic Year 2010/2011)

This research aimed at improving the students reading competence using Student Teams Achievement-Division (STAD) technique. It used Classroom Action Research, which was conducted at VIII A Grade Students of SMP N 1 Sumbang in Academic Year 2010/2011 as the subject of the research. The number of the students was 36 students. This study was done from October 2010 until March 2011.


The researcher worked collaboratively with the English teacher in the class. The Classroom Action Research was carried out based on the Kemmis and Mc. Taggart design. The researcher took two cycles with two actions in each cycle. Each cycle consisted of planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The researcher applied both qualitative data and quantitative data that were taken from questionnaire, observation, reading test, and interview.


The result of the research showed that there was a significant improvement in the students reading competence after implementing the Classroom Action Research using STAD technique. The mean of the students in reading test score was as follows; pre test showed 48.61%, cycle one showed 74.30%, and cycle two showed 89.75%. Therefore, the improvement of mean from pre test until cycle two was 41.14%. It was supported by the improvement of observation and questionnaire result. The data of observation showed that the average of the students improvement in reading activities in cycle one at 32.28% and cycle two at 47.91%. Then, the improvement from cycle one to cycle two was 15.63%. The data from the students questionnaire which were gained from the ten questions showed that the students gave positive response to the implementation of STAD technique in their reading activities. The average of the students questionnaire was 83.3%. Those data proved that STAD technique could improve the students reading competence and the students reading activities. It means that the method could solve the problem reading class.
