Translation plays significant role in the transfer of science and knowledge. Therefore, translation class at universities is mainly aimed at equipping the students with the practical skills to conduct all tasks related to translation to satisfy above demand. As a matter of fact, translation class usually runs slowly as the students spend most of their time on looking up the dictionary, instead of other syntax and semantics problems. Those are among the problems faced by students in translation class. However such problems lead the need for establishing a

comprehensive evaluation to assess students performance in translation class.

Dealing with equivalence, students can not always match the content of messages in the source language by an expression with exactly the same content in target language, because what can be expressed and what must be expressed is a property of a specific language in much the same way as how it can be expressed.

In fact, translation is not an easy matter. It needs comprehensive knowledge as well a good understanding of both languages (SL and TL). Since translation involves two distinct languages, it means that both social and cultural

background of that involved languages should also be considered.

This complicated nature of translation attracts the writer to elaborate translation further by writing this paper. It will focus on several points, they are: the definition of translation, kinds of translation, the process of translation, criteria for a good translator, translation problems and translation evaluation. It is hoped that this paper can give a better understanding about translation especially for those who are interested in translation and translation studies.
