THE EFFECTIVENESS OF POETRY PARAPHRASING IN TEACHING WRITING IN SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL (An Experiment Study in 2nd Grade of SMK BAKTI Purwokerto in the Academic Year 2009/2010)

This research was aimed at knowing the effectiveness of poetry paraphrasing in teaching writing. This research is also tried to make the students able to express their ideas, feelings, and thoughts by using words easily.

This research was conducted at SMK Bakti Purwokerto in the academic year 2009/2010. The total sample of this research was 71 respondents. The method of this research is an experiment, especially quasi experimental method, because the respondents were divided into two groups: the control class and the experiment class. Both of them were given treatments, but the treatment using Poetry Paraphrasing was given for the experimental class and control class was given treatment using the textbook. Treatment was carried out in two months (April to May 2010). The data collection technique used test. There were pre-test and post-test. The test used essay test. The test was evaluated John Andersons measurement in Arthur Hughes that consisted of measurement in grammar, vocabulary, mechanic, fluency and form of the text

After the data had been analyzed, the result of control class and experiment class was 2.9477; so t-test was higher than t-table at the level significance 0.05% for d.f = 69 (1.9949) and 2.9477 > 1.9949. It means that there was positive effect in teaching writing using poetry paraphrasing to the second grade students of SMK Bakti Purwokerto in academic year 2009/2010 and the hypothesis was acceptable.
