ABSTRACT



This classroom action research was aimed to improve the students grammar competence especially in using simple past tense through Climbing Grammar Mountain game at the second grade students of SMPN 1 Sumbang in academic year 2009/2010. This research was done in the class VIII D with 43 students as the subject of the research. The research was done for one month (February 2010).



The data were collected through observation, grammar test (pre test and post test), questionnaire, field note, and documentation. There were two kinds of data analysis, qualitative data and quantitative data. The qualitative data was gained by analyzing the observation result in using Climbing Grammar Mountain game that improved the students grammar competence in learning English. The quantitative data were obtained by accounting the percentage of indicators of students activities through pre test and post test, and questionnaire result of students.



The result of the research showed that there was an improvement of students grammar competence. In each action and the last action showed significant improvement which had achieved the criteria of the action success. It could be seen from the mean of pre test and post test. The mean of pre test was 43 and the mean of post test in the cycle two was 80, 06. And it had reached the indicator of the action success (66). The result of students observation in the classroom showed that there was an improvement 20, 1% from the mean of students activities in cycle 1 (42, 65%) to the mean of students activities in the cycle 2 (62, 75%). It was also supported by the data gained from questionnaire which showed that almost all students felt happy, motivated, and enthusiastic in the teaching learning process by using that tecnique. Based on the description above, Climbing Grammar Mountain game was able to improve the students grammar competence in learning English.
