This research was aimed at improving students participation in procedure text reading comprehension lessons through Small Group Discussion. The objective of the research was to know whether the small group discussion can improve the students participation in teaching reading. The research was conducted at the 7C grade of SMP Negeri 3 Purwokerto in the academic year of 2010/2011 using classroom action research. The writer took 35 students as the subject of the research.


In collecting the data, the writer used observation, interview, documentation, and field notes. In analyzing the data, the writer employed a qualitative research methodology with following processes: collecting data, reducing data, presenting data and making conclusion.


The result of the study showed that Small Group Discussion could improve the students participation, and indirectly it could improve students achievement. It can be seen from the result of the observation during the action that showed a change from category bad into category fair. It can also be seen from the result of the pre and post-test of procedure text as the supporting data. The average of the pre-test was 71.1%, and it changed in the post-test for 79.8%.


The results of the study showed that there was 8.5% of the students who actively gave question before the treatment and it improved into 17.1% after the implementation of Small Group Discussion. There were 11.4% of the students who answered when the teacher gave questions, and it improved up to 34.3%. The students who paid attention and made no noise improved from 62.8% to 84.3%. The students who did what the teacher asked to do were 100%. The students who worked in group well improved 25.7% to 51.4%. The students who gave opinion improved from 5.7% to 14.3%.
