Keyword : Acanthus ilicifolius, hepatoprotective activity

Acanthus ilicifolius is one of mangrove ecosystem plant that is reported as ethnomedicine in several countries. In India, it is used to treat rheumatism, snake bite, paralysis and asthma. Thai peoples use this plant as anti inflammation. It had been reported that its aerial part contains benzoxazinoid glucoside. This study was tried to reveals hepatoprotective activity and containing compounds of Acanthus ilicifolius that is grown in Tritih area, Cilacap, Central Java, Indonesia. Petroleum ether (PE) and methanol (MeOH) extract are administered in male Wistar strain rats by per orale in dose 150; 75; 37.5 and 300; 150; 75 mg/kgBW, respectively. It had been found that PE extract and MeOH extract are contain triterpenoid and alkaloid; flavonoid; tannin respectively. Serum activity of glutamate pyruvate transaminase (GPT) and glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (GOT) of CCl4-induced rat had been decreased, eventhough unsignificantly. It is supported by histopathology analysis that reveals less necrosis in the highest dose of both extracts. These results implied that using aforementioned serial doses did not enough to support hepatoprotective activity of Acanthus ilicifolius.
