CULTURAL COMPETENCY IN LANGUAGE CLASSROOM TO SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

In term of development, the role of human resources is unequivocal to maintain its sustainability. Therefore, education at all level should be aimed at enhancing both personal and social intelligence. Those intelligences are the keywords that ensure students to take a part successfully in the rapid change of this global world. Cultural competency is considered as one of social intelligence needed by students as the young generation so they can achieve an ultimate awareness of being related each other. In the context of language teaching and learning, cultural contents should be given a special attention. It is due to the fact of interrelatedness between language and culture. Combining cultural competency with linguistics competency in language class room is assumed to be the best synergy to achieve cross cultural awareness. This paper is aimed at: 1) exploring the importance of cultural competency as an aspect of students’ character building in language classroom; 2) finding out the best material in language classroom that boosts students’ cultural competency; 3) formulating an appropriate strategy in language teaching and learning settings to accommodate both students’ linguistics and cultural competencies to contribute in a sustainable development. It is hoped that such formulation in a language classroom will be a strategic practical steps that empower students’ potential to give a better contribution in national development as well as in the global relationship to create a mutual understanding among nations.
