A STUDY ON STUDENTS COMPETENCE IN PRONOUNS (A Study on the Second Semester Students of English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto in the Academic Year 2009/2010)

The aims of this research were (1) to find out the students competence in pronouns, (2) to reveal the types of error made by the students in pronouns.

The method used was descriptive. The data was taken on April, 2010 on the second semester students of English Department of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto. The number of population was 195 students from four classes, A, B, C, and D that were more divided into eight small groups A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, and D1, D2. The researcher took 20% of the whole population, so the sample of this research consisted of 39 students. The researcher rounded it to become 40 students. For the sampling technique, the researcher used random sampling technique. The instrument used in this research was test. The test consisted of 30 items of multiple choice completion test with four options A, B, C, and D for each item and 10 items of simple completion (sentence) test.

Having conducted the research, the researcher found that the students competence in pronouns belonged to fair category, because the classical competence was 57.5%. The most common error made by the students in pronouns was false concept hypothesized. It happened because of faulty comprehension which might be caused by poor gradation of teaching items. Another error belonged to ignorance of rule restrictions. It happened because the students failed to apply the rule of the target language. They tried to create forms based on their own analogies, which are unacceptable in English.
